Abstract
Polymer particles, e.g. beads, granules, powder, are separated from removable components, e.g. purified, by forming a suspension, preferably with agitation and at raised temperature, of the polymer and a suspension stabilizer in a liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymer but a solvent for the removable components and separating the extracted polymer particles from the liquid. The suspension stabilizer may be added to the liquid as a coating on the polymer particles. Specified stabilizers are zinc oxide, tricalcium phosphate, magnesium, barium or aluminium phosphate, calcium carbonate, calcium fluoride, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, talc, kaolin, kieselguhr, aluminium oxide, barium sulphate, magnesium carbonate, ferric carbonate, magnesium silicate and bentonite. The liquid may be methanol, ethanol, propanol or isopropanol. The polymers mentioned are polystyrene, polyvinyl naphthalene, polyvinyl diphenyl, poly-o-, m-, and p-methyl-or ethyl-styrene, poly-dimethyl styrene, poly-isopropyl-styrene, poly-p-cyclohexyl styrene, poly-p-phenyl styrene, poly-methoxystyrene, poly-halo- and dihalo-styrenes, poly-halo-alkyl-styrenes, poly-monocyano and dicyano-styrenes, poly-cyano-alkyl styrenes, poly-acrylic, alpha-methacrylic and alpha-chloroacrylic acids and their esters, e.g. methyl esters, amides and nitriles, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinylidene chloride and fluoride, polythene, polyisobutylene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl propionate, polyvinyl benzoate, polydivinyl ether, polyvinyl isopropenyl ether, polyvinyl methyl ether, polyvinyl ethyl ether, polydivinyl ketone, polymethyl vinyl ketone, polyvinyl ethyl ketone, polyacrylophenone, poly N-vinyl amides, poly N-vinyl acetamide, poly N-vinyl succinimide, poly N-vinyl phthalimide, poly N-vinyl maleimide, poly N-vinyl caprolactam and copolymers of mixtures of the above monomers. Specified copolymers are those derived from styrene, alpha-methyl styrene and divinyl benzene; styrene, vinyl naphthalene, alpha-methyl styrene and divinyl benzene; styrene, vinylidene chloride and vinyl acetate; vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate; vinylidene chloride, styrene, methacrylamide and methyl vinyl ketone; vinylidene chloride, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene and methacrylamide; methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene, maleic anhydride and dimethyl maleate. The process is useful for determining the quantities of plasticizers, dyes and stabilizers present in polymeric materials.
