Abstract

685,777. Regenerative heat-exchangers for cooling gases &c. HOWDEN and CO., Ltd., J., and ULANDER, P. H. N. April 16, 1951 [March 17, 1950], No. 6776/50. Class 64 (i) A regenerative heat-exchanger for transferring heat between a gas and a liquid e.g. to cool the gas, comprises a heat transfer body 1 carried in a cylindrical rotor 2 which is rotatable about an upright axis 3 within a casing 4 and forms a common downflow duct for gas and liquid, a liquid distributer 7 attached to the top of the casing 4 and provided with conduit and openings 22 for the passage of liquid and gas respectively to the body 1, a gas inlet duct 21 above the body 1 and distributer 7, and a receiving chamber 14 below the casing 4 and body 1 to receive the gas and liquid, the chamber having a sump 13 for the liquid and a counterflow outlet duct 23 for the gas. The liquid conduits in the distributer 7 are four perforated tapering radial tubes. The liquid leaving the body 1 and not entrained by the cooled gases is partly collected in radial troughs 9 drained by pipes 10 into an annular space 11 leading to sump 13, and is partly deposited on the conical wall 15 also draining into the space 11. Liquid entrained by the gas is separated from it by centrifugal action produced by swirl vanes 16. A float controlled valve 19 discharges accumulated liquid. According to the Provisional Specification, the body 1 may be fixed and the liquid distributer may rotate.
