685,758. Recording-apparatus. ELECTRONIC & X-RAY APPLICATIONS, Ltd., TUNNICLIFFE, E. A. J., and MATTHEWS, H. C. H. June 22, 1950 [March 22, 1949], No. 7825/49. Class 106 (iv). A recording-apparatus comprises a generator of infra-red rays and means to direct a beam of the radiation on to a continuouslymoving recording surface while deflecting the beam transversely in accordance with changes in a variable to be recorded on the surface, which surface is of such nature as to change its appearance under exposure to infra red rays. Infrared rays from a source 2 are directed on to a reflector 3 whose angular position is controlled by a galvanometer 4 influenced through lines 5 by the variable to be recorded and the reflected rays play upon the wax-coated surface of a strip 1 either directly or through a reflector 6. When in use, the strip 1 is drawn from a supply spool 9 by a roller 10 driven, e.g. by a small electric motor, in a direction transverse to the oscillations of the rays which melt the wax and expose the differently-coloured surface of the strip 1 along a trace 8. The wax may be softened before recording by a device, e.g. a small electric heater or lamp 12 and to allow the wax to solidify after recording the path of the strip 1 may be extended by passing it over another roller 11. In apparatus for recording by angular co-ordinates the record surface would be given an angular movement. The apparatus is stated to be particularly suitable for electromedical purposes such as producing direct reading cardiograph records.
