A stalk and straw disintegrator and scatterer for a combine or other harvester comprises means of lateral conveyance across the stalk discharge passage of the harvester, a rotary cutting device adapted to receive and cut the stalks and straw fed thereto by said means of lateral conveyance, and means for discharging the cut stalks and straw. In one modification the disintegrator has in combination a set of axially arranged rotary knives 19, a second and co-operating set of fixed cutter elements 17 working in close relationship with said set of rotary knives, a rotor body 15 having means of conveyance 16 thereon, a structure for rotatably mounting said body in substantially horizontal position to receive said stalks and straw and in position to rotate with its discharge end in very close proximity to such of said rotary knives as are positioned nearest said rotor body, the said rotory knives and fixed cutter elements being oppositely and longitudinally disposed relative to the discharge end portion of said rotor body, a structure for rotatably mounting on a single substantially horizontal axis, said rotary knives and said rotor body, a smooth drum 31 adjacent to and disposed between said fixed cutter elements, a rotor housing 27 disposed laterally relative to said cutter elements and receiving therefrom, a rotor 30 mounted in said housing for revolution on a horizontal axis, said rotor housing having a discharge opening 32 disposed in its upper portion, and a hood deflector 33 for directing the discharge stream as it leaves said opening, and means for positively preventing winding or wrapping of said stalks and straw about the axis of rotation of said rotor.- As shown in Figs. 1, 2 rotatably mounted in a housing 5 extending horizontally and transversely relative to and attached to the discharge stream of the combine 6 is a frusto-conical rotatable drum 15 having secured thereto a flange 16 in a spiral pattern which conveys the straw and stalks to a fixed cutter 17 and rotary knives 19 mounted on the drum shaft 11 towards the end of the drum which work in co-operation to cut the straw, &c., which is drawn into a further housing 27 by a rotor 30 mounted therein and discharged through an opening 32 in its upper rearward portion and scattered by a device S consisting of a relatively nat and slightly downward curved plate 33 and two similar and obtusely triangular flanges 34 secured thereto and to each other. In a modification shown in Fig. 5 the drum 44 is not frusto-conical and has its flanges 45 closer together. Removable knife holders 46 each carrying a knife 47 thereon in fixed relation to the shaft 43 on which they are mounted equi-distantly so that the knives 47 are staggered in relation to each other are provided to co-operate with equidistantly fixed cutter elements 51 to cut the straw which is drawn into the rotor housing 54 and discharged from the top 55 by a rotor 53 a pivoted triangular hood 56 being provided for directing the discharge.
