Abstract

Oxides of titanium, zirconium, chromium, iron, aluminium, silicon &c. produced by the decomposition of volatile chlorides with oxygen-containing gases at high temperatures, and containing small quantities of chloride and hydrochloric acid formed from the moisture present in the gases, are mixed in a dry state with alkaline reacting oxidic compound of the alkaline earths, including magnesium, e.g. slaked lime or barium hydroxide, in a quantity at least sufficient for neutralization, and then moistened, preferably in the warm state, with, say, 1-3 per cent liquid water or steam, excess of the alkaline earth compound, if present, is then neutralized with carbon dioxide, and the product is dried.
