Abstract
683,709. Packing for stern glands. VOITH GES., J. M. March 2, 1950 [Oct. 1, 1948], No. 5339/50. Class 122(v) [Also in Group XXXIII] The vertical shaft 2 of an oscillating vane type propeller is provided with a main sealing member 9, 10 disposed sufficiently below the bottom 7 of the gear casing to enable access to be had to it without dismantling the transmission or propeller, and an auxiliary sealing device 14, 15, 16 for preventing entrance of water into the ship when the propeller is at rest, and thus enabling the main sealing member 9 to be dismantled. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the main sealing member consists of the normal packing 9 and gland 10, while the auxiliary member consists of a ring 16 which may be pressed against seatings formed on members 14, 15 by bolts 17 and cap nuts 20. The sealing ring 16 may be made of the material sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Buna ", and inserted in a metal backing ring. Each bolt 17 may be fitted with a rubber sealing ring 19. In the alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 4 the auxiliary sealing member comprises an annular diaphragm 36 with a projecting portion 37 which may be pressed against a ring 41 by bolts 40. To permit removal of the main packing 9 when the propeller is not running the working compartment above the packing may be hermetically sealed and placed under air pressure.
