683,658. Cutting by fusion. SOUDURE AUTOGENE FRANCAISE. Jan. 8,1951 [Jan. 10, 1950], No. 551/51. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXVI] The speed of a manually propelled carriage for an oxy-cutting torch is kept substantially constant by a lever escapement mechanism coupled with the wheels of the carriage. A torch holder 9 is adjustably mounted by means of an arm 8, Fig. 2, on a carriage having two non-slipping wheels 1 secured by screws 26 to an axle 2 which is geared as shown in Fig. 5 to an escapement mechanism comprising a toothed wheel 13 and an oscillating lever 23. The ends of the lever are shaped so that the carriage is reversible and so that the lever is kept in motion by the manual pull on the carriage transmitted to the wheel 13. A fly-wheel 24 determines the frequency of the lever for a given torque applied to the wheel 13. By loosening a screw 26, one of the wheels 1 may be freed from the axle to facilitate movement of the carriage along a curved path. In a modification the torch is mounted on a four-wheeled carriage, the axle of the rear wheels being controlled by the escapement mechanism.
