Abstract

683,564. Oil gas generation. ALLIED CHEMICAL & DYE CORPORATION. June 27, 1950 [Sept. 2, 1949], No. 16000/50. Class 55 (ii). Oil gas is generated by passing steam upwardly through a zone 6 containing hot refractory material and an empty zone 4 in which it encounters a downward spray of oil from a nozzle 25, the gaseous products passing downwardly through empty and refractory-filled zones 38, 41, to effect further cracking and fixing. Preferably a carrier gas such as methane, ethane or propane from a line 65 or the generated gas returned through a line 66 is added to the steam as propelling medium for part or all of the make period. In the duplicated apparatus shown the cycle of operations comprises blast and make periods with interposed steam purges in one direction followed by periods of reverse flow. For a blast period primary air is admitted from a line 15 downwardly through a refractory-lined riser pipe 9 and is heated by the checkerbrick in zone 6, burning off deposited carbon, before passage through a narrowed orifice 7 into zone 5 into which heat oil from a line 26 is sprayed and ignited to heat the walls, secondary air being admitted through a line 32. The heated air burns off carbon from the walls of both zones 4 and 38 and combustion products after heating the checkerbrick in zone 41 ascend a riser pipe 43 to a stack 46. Steam for the purge and make periods enters riser 9 through a line 18. During the make steam and recycle gas issue through orifice 7 at about 50 ft. per second. Carbon depositing on the walls of chambers 4, 38, in part reacts with the steam to form blue gas and before orifice 42 into zone 41 is reached less than 10 per cent of carbon resulting from cracking remains in the gases, which after fixing in zone 41 pass up through riser 43 and a conduit 51 to a wash box and foul gas main. "Liquid-petroleum gas" such as propane, butane and pentane or heavy cracked residuums or other low grade oils may be used in the process.
