Abstract

683,474. Discharge apparatus. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Sept. 28, 1949 (Oct. 18, 1948], No. 24934/49. Class 39(i) An electron discharge tube wherein an electron beam emitted by a cylindrical cathode C perpendicular to the beam direction is projected into the space between a pair of electrodes, between which is applied a potential difference which sets up in the space an electric field perpendicular to the cathode and to the beam, is characterised by the combination with the cathode of an electronic optical system comprising an anode A which partly surrounds the cathode concentrically and which is completed by a system of two electrodes, one of which C<SP>1</SP> is at the potential of the__cathode and the other b, c connected to the anode, the space between the two electrodes being in direct communication with the inlet end of the space through which the beam passes. Fig. 6 shows the invention applied to a travelling wave tube in which the beam passes between a helix H and an electrode Z negative to the cathode, the electrode C<SP>1</SP> being so positioned that the electric field between electrodes H and Z is not disturbed by it. A magnetic field is provided perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. If the electrode Z is at cathode potential it may be made integral with the electrode C<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4 (not shown); the electrodes of this arrangement may be bent round in a circle to form a magnetron type of arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown). The cathode may be of metal or may be oxide coated, and may be in the form of a filament or in the form of a helix wound on a cylinder.
