Abstract

683,162. Combustion chambers; auxiliary charges; cooling; valve gear. BARNES AUTOMOTIVE DEVELOPMENTS, Inc. July 28, 1950 [Aug. 6, 1949], No. 18888/50. Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii) and 7 (vi). In an internal-combustion engine including a power cylinder 1 having a cylinder head 5 with air intake and exhaust passages communicating with the cylinder, the head 5 also having an initial combustion chamber 8 communicating with the cylinder independently of the air intake passage 16, a piston 3 reciprocable in the cylinder, the cylinder and head forming a combustion space including the chamber 8, and a fuel intake passage 18 for introducing fuel into the chamber 8, there are provided valves 14, 13 co-operating with the air inlet and fuel passages 16, 18 respectively, which ; are so arranged that air only is admitted directly into the cylinder by one valve, such a valve 14, and part of the air from the main inlet manifold 17 and all of the fuel is admitted by auxiliary intake valve 13, whilst igniting means, for example, a sparking plug 28, is used to ignite the fuel in the pocket. In the intake manifold 17 is located a secondary manifold 19 the air in which latter flows across an injection nozzle 26 and the mixture so formed enters the substantially spherical chamber 8 through an opening controlled by the auxiliary engine operated valve 13; the valve 13 and the main inlet valve 14 are operated directly from a bifurcated rocker arm 20. The chamber 8 is located to one side of the longitudinal cylin-, der axis whilst the bottom wall of the head 5 is tapered at 12 to enlarge the opening 10 between the main hemispherical combustion space 4 and the chamber 8; the arrangement of the chamber 8 is such as to promote swirling of the mixture therein during the compression stroke. The cylin; der and head are provided with cooling jackets 2 and 6 respectively which are interconnected by openings 7. In a modification, the piston em; bodies a recess immediately below the initial combustion chamber 8. In a further modification, the piston recess is of such a size as to extend beneath the intake valve as well as the initial combustion chamber.
