In a gramophone having a pick-up 8 which is movable parallel to the record surface on guide rails 9 and is movable by a manual control from an operative position on the record to an inoperative position off the record, and vice versa, the pick-up 8 has a movable member 31 which is engaged, when the pick-up is in the inoperative position, by the edge of a record 2 being moved edgeways on to the turntable 4, and the pick-up 8 is pushed against frictional resistance to the appropriate starting position over the record. The pick-up 8 is suspended from a carriage 11 movably supported between the guide rails 9 by means of rollers 12. Mounted on the carriage 11 is a rigid bracket 27, Fig. 3, from the end of which an arm 26 carrying the pick-up 8 is hinged. The pick-up 8 is lifted and lowered by means of a rod 13 under the control of a knob 16 which, by means of a rod 19, pinions 22 thereon and racks 23 along the upper edges of diagonally-slotted sliding members 20, causes the rod 13 to be raised and lowered in vertical slots 14. When the pick-up 8 is raised to the inoperative position, a pad 25 on the pick-up is pressed against the lower guide rod 9, so that movement of the carriage 11 is damped. In this position, the switch 32 of the motor 33 is "OFF." Upon a record 2 being inserted edgeways into the cabinet, the edge of the record engages the member 31 suspended from the pick-up 8, and pushes the pick-up against the friction of the pad 25 along the guide rods 9 so that it reaches the correct starting position for the record being inserted when the said record is located on the centre pin 5 of the turntable 4. Rotation of the knob 16 then serves to operate the motor switch 32, and lower the pick-up 8, the impact of which with the record is reduced by means of an eccentric disc, 29 mounted on the pick-up 8 forming part of the member 31. An alternative embodiment is described with reference to Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) in which a conventional swinging pick-up arm is employed, the lifting and lowering being effected by a ring member encircling the bearing of pick-up arm shaft, and the motor is movable out of the cabinet on slides for the placing of the record, which then engages a depending member on the pick-up when moved back into the cabinet. When the motor has been restored to its playing position the turntable engages a driving belt and the pick-up is thus lowered onto the turntable.
