Abstract

A process for the manufacture of 3 : 31-carbalkoxymethylene - bis - (4 - hydroxycoumarins) which are known to be blood anti-coagulants comprises the reaction of an alkali metal compound of a 4-hydroxy-coumarin with a dihalogen acetic acid alkyl ester in an alcoholic medium. Esters with alkyl groups containing up to 6 carbon atoms are referred to. In an example carbethoxy-methylene-bis-(4-hydroxycoumarin) is obtained by reacting the potassium compound of 4-hydroxycoumarin and ethyl dichloroacetate in absolute alcohol with a sodium iodide catalyst.
