Abstract

Dry preparations of fat soluble vitamins for fortifying animal feeds comprise a multiplicity of small spheroidal particles each of which is a mixture of a wax-like material having a melting point of at least 45 DEG C, e.g. a hydrogenated coconut, cottonseed, peanut, soyabean or fish oil, stearic acid, a mineral wax such as ozokerite or microcrystalline wax, carnauba, candelilla, esparto or ouricury wax, the fat soluble vitamin-containing material, e.g. a fish liver oil, a vitamin A concentrate, irradiated ergosterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol, carotene, vitamin D2 and D3 concentrates, and a vegetable meal, e.g. fine soyabean meal, wheat germ meal, maize germ meal, alfalfa leaf meal, linseed meal, maize meal, wheat bran, oatmeal, peanut meal, bolted rice polish, wheat flour. The wax-like material is preferably at least 30 per cent by weight of the product, and the vegetable meal is preferably between 1 and 50 per cent. The particles may contain an edible antioxidant effective upon fat-soluble vitamins, e.g. butylated hydroxy anisole, propyl gallate, gallic acid, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, vitamin E, mixed tocopherols, in the proportion of at lesat 0.05 per cent, and lecithin, citric acid or an alkyl phosphate may be incorporated to serve as a synergist for the antioxidant. The particles may be made by ejecting a mixture of the ingredients in molten condition through perforations in the walls of a rapidly rotating vessel, or spraying a mixture of the ingredients in molten condition, into a cool chamber. In an example illustrating resistance of vitamin A in the particles to oxidative destruction, there is described mixing of the particles with expeller soyabean meal and then with a mineral mixture of 40 parts of ground limestone, 40 parts of steamed bone meal and 16 parts of salt. Specifications 531,225, 553,328, [both in Group IV], 573,937, 590,090, and U.S.A. Specifications 1,633,711, 1,764,085, 2,195,595, 2,206,113, 2,345,576, 2,396,680, 2,396,681, 2,426,762 and 2,433,593 are referred to.ALSO:I Dry preparations of fat-soluble vitamins comprise a multiplicity of small spheroidal particles each of which is a mixture of a wax-like material having a melting point of at least 45 DEG C., e.g. a hydrogenated coconut, cottonseed, peanut, soyabean or fish oil, stearic acid, a mineral wax such as ozokerite or microcrystalline wax, carnauba, candelilla, esparto or ouricury wax, the fat-soluble vitamin-containing material, e.g. a fish liver oil, a vitamin A concentrate, irradiated ergosterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol, carotene, vitamin D2 and D3 concentrates, and a vegetable meal, e.g. fine soyabean meal, wheat germ meal, maize germ meal, alfalfa leaf meal, linseed meal, maize meal, wheat bran, oatmeal, peanut meal, bolted rice polish, wheat flour.
