Abstract
A vaginal douche composition comprises a non-toxic, water-soluble astringent selected from the group consisting of aluminium and zinc salts and a wetting agent which is an alkylated aryl polyether alcohol and is preferably non-germicidal (defined). Specified astringents are zinc sulphate, zinc chloride, zinc acetate, aluminium sulphate, ammonium alum and potash alum. The compositions may be in the form of solids or concentrated solutions which are dissolved or diluted with water to form a douche of pH 3 to 6, and preferably 4 to 5. Acids such as sulphuric, acetic, tartaric, citric, malic and lactic; acid salts of these acids, and a mixture of sodium citrate and sodium acid citrate may be incorporated in the compositions to produce the desired pH. Other materials which may be present are (a) sodium chloride to render solutions isotonic or hypertonic (b) lactose to condition the vaginal bacteria and (c) aromatics such as menthol and oil of peppermint. The douche contains 0.06-0.5 per cent of astringent and 0.00016 to 0.1 per cent of wetting agent. Examples are given of solid compositions.
