Abstract
680,555. Cementing shoe soles. LOTUS, Ltd., and MERCER, F. G. Oct. 20, 1950 [Oct. 20, 1949], No. 26957/49. Class 17 (ii). Leather soles, in the manufacture of shoes by the " stuck-on " process, are first softened by immersion by dipping in a volatile non-staining liquid harmless to leather from which the softened sole is removed and transferred to a conforming press. The sole is then permitted to regain its initial rigidity and a nitro-cellulose type of adhesive is applied. The adhesive is activated by immersing the sole by dipping it into a bath containing a volatile non-staining liquid harmless to leather and an activator for the adhesive employed. The upper is then applied to the sole in a usual shoe press. A mixture for softening the leather sole is given as methyl ethyl ketone 25 per cent, acetone 20 per cent, petroleum ether 25 per cent, "Lythene" (Registered Trade Mark) 10 per cent, benzol 15 per cent, all by volume. An example of a mixture for softening the adhesive is acetone 35 per cent, petroleum ether 25 per cent, ethyl acetate 10 per cent, methyl ethyl ketone 25 per cent, di-butyl phthalate 5 per cent, all by volume. Specifications 496,389, 680,524, 680,561, [Group III], and U.S.A. Specification 2,208,809 are referred to.
