680,274. Splined couplings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 25, 1951 [Feb. 2, 1950], No. 1945/51. Class 80 (ii). . In a splined coupling between a driving sleeve 25, subject to torsional vibrations, and one end of a driven shaft 21, lost motion is provided between the co-operating splines of approximately three times the maximum amplitude of torsional vibration of the sleeve 25, whereby the amplitude of torsional vibration of the shaft 21 at critical frequency is limited to twice the torsional deflection of the shaft due to the load thereon. The sleeve 25 and shaft 21 are also connected by pre-compressed discs 26 of soft rubber which may be bonded thereto and which absorb axial vibrations. As shown, the other end of shaft 21, which is torsionally flexible, is rigidly splined to a quill shaft 20 which surrounds shaft 21 with clearance and which carries the rotor of an aircraft generator.
