Abstract

680,145. Fuel-injection pumps. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AKT.-GES. March 3, 1950 [May 4, 1949; May 27, 1949], No. 5482/50. Class 102 (i). In a fuel injection arrangement, fuel is fed by a pump 3 through a rotary valve 9 to an injection pump 4 from which the fuel is distributed to several cylinders by the valve 9. During the suction stroke of the pump 4, one of the diametral bores 17 connects the ports 18, 19 to permit flow to the pump and during the suction stroke, this connection is broken so that at the commencement of delivery, the ports overlap to provide sealing and prevent leakage. During the delivery stroke, fuel passes through pipe 8, port 30, annular groove 13 in the valve 9 and one of the ports 15 to an engine cylinder. Injection finishes when a bore 17 aligns with a port 22 in communication with the pump 4 and permits release through port 21 to pipe 20. The edge of the port 22 is inclined so that release is varied by moving the valve 9 axially. The bush 12 may be rotated by rack 29 to vary the timing. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, two fuelinjection pumps 108, 109 are provided, each having a rotary valve 125, 126 placed close to the pump and parallel to the eccentric shaft 102 and driven by gearing 132, 133. The feed pump is connected to inlet 116 and is connected to the injection pumps through a throttle 120. The pressure before the throttle 120, which is proportional to the engine speed, acts on a piston 114 loaded by a spring 121. The piston 114 actuates a member composed of two parts each having a projection 151 engaging slots 152 in bushes 138, 139 surrounding the valves 125, 126 to vary the time of injection; the two parts may be adjusted relatively to each other by a screw 154 so that the timing controlled by each valve may be adjusted; each bush may also be adjusted longitudinally. The valves are adjusted axially by a rod 137. A relief valve 156 is fitted beyond the delivery valve 140 of each pump.
