Abstract

A surface is provided with a coating which lowers the adhesion of ice to the surface by (1) coating the surface with an alkali metal silicate or an organic silicate and (2) applying a polyorganohalogenopolysiloxane to the coated surface. Specified silicates are tetra substituted lower alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, partially hydrolyzed organo and partially hydrolyzed alkali metals silicates. Polyorganohalogenopolysiloxanes which may be used are those disclosed in Specifications 586,187 and 597,178 [both in Group IV], or may be tetramethyl and tetraethyl, 1-2 dichlorodisiloxane, hexabutyl, 1, 3-difluorotrisiloxane and tetraphenyl, 1, 2-dichlorodisiloxane. It is preferred that the first coating is applied as a 0.1 to 25 per cent solution in a non-aqueous solvent such as toluene, benzene, xylene or the diethyl ether of ethylene glycol, although either coating material may be used per se. Examples are given of the treatment of anodized aluminium ice cube trays, and dividers using (1) and (2) an aqueous solution of sodium silicate and then a toluene solution of polymethylchloropolysiloxane, and (3) tetramethylsilicate followed by the same toluene solution. Surfaces which may be so treated comprise steel, phosphatized surfaces, ceramic surfaces, brass, silver, magnesium, aluminium, copper and plastic surfaces.
