Abstract

Class 8 (i) In a pressure exchanger in which scavenging is employed at least at the heat rejection stage and the direction of flow of the gas supplied to and withdrawn from the cells during a scavenging period is axial with respect to the ring of cells, or has a substantial axial component, each cell comprises structure which, in association with duct means leading the scavenging gas to and from the cells constrains the current of such gas to undergo reversal of flow within the cell. A cell rotor 2 is mounted for rotating in an outer casing 1 and comprises an inner cylinder 4 and an outer cylinder 3 connected by radial partitions 5 forming cells 6 ; the cells are open at one end and closed at the other except for apertures 8, for transfer gas flow, which apertures communicate with apertures 9 in an end plate 1a of the casing 1. At front and rear corresponding apertures 9 are connected by pipes 10. An end plate 1b of the casing 1 has a sector shaped opening 11 which is connected to a duct 13 for low pressure scavenging and a similar opening 12 connected to a duct 16 for high pressure scavenging. The duct 13 is divided into ducts 14, 15, for the exit of expanded gas and the entry of fresh gas respectively and the duct 16 is divided into ducts 17, 18, for the entry of hot gas and the exit of compressed gas respectively. Each cell 6 is divided by a partition 19 into radially inner passages 21 and outer passages 20 connected at the end opposite to the ducting. The passages 20, 21 diverge in the direction of flow of the gases and the partition is shaped to reduce losses in the bend; guide vanes 22 may also be provided. In a modification the cells are divided into three radially disposed passages and the ducts 13, 16, into three separate ducts. Gas may enter into the centre ducts and passages and flow out from the outer passages and ducts or vice versa. In a further modification the partitions 5 radially inward and outward of the partition 19 are suitably inclined in and away from the direction of rotation to secure shockless entry of the incoming gas. In a further modification two contra-rotating cells are separated by a stationary structure which replaces the transfer gas pipes 10 and in a still further modification two adjacent contra-rotating cells are provided, transfer gas flowing directly between the cells.
