Class 69 (ii) [Also in Group XIII] A hydraulic torque converter of the F÷ttinger or Lysholm type is driven by a combustion engine, e.g. an i.-c. engine 10, having a cooling jacket, a pump 20 for circulating cooling liquid such as water and a cooler 16 for the liquid. Moreover, a jacketed housing of the converter provides a space for cooling liquid around the working chamber of the converter and connections 38, 42 from the engine cooling system to and from the converter jacket 54. Some of the water from the pump 20 passes through the conduit 38 to the cooling jacket 54 which is on a casing 14 around the working chamber of the torque converter. Since the inlet 26 on the jacket is separated by a wall from the outlet 30, the water passes in a zig-zag path around baffles 56, Fig. 3, to encircle the converter casing 14, then returns, by way of the conduit 42, to the cooling radiator 16 together with water from the jacket of the engine 10. To prevent overcooling of the converter, a thermally controlled valve 48 responsive to the converter temperature is included at the outlet 30. In a modification, Fig. 1, (not shown), the jackets are connected for series flow therethrough. Circumferential grooves 50 in the converter casing 14 contain rubber packing rings and the sheet metal jacket 54 is secured by crimping. In a modification of the converter jacket, Figs. 5, 6, (not shown), the baffles extend circumferentially instead of axially as shown.
