Abstract
679,509. Apparatus for making coffee. FISCHL, F. April 20, 1950 [April 30, 1949], No. 9729/50. Class 129. [Also in Group XXV] A coffee-maker of the pressure type comprises an open top boiler 10 communicating through a lift pipe 32 with a ground coffee receptacle 26, which is located above the liquid level and communicates through a second lift pipe 66 with the interior of a collecting vessel 12 detachably engaged with the upper edge of the boiler 10, the first lift pipe 32 being rigidly attached to a partition member i.e. the base of the receptacle 26, part of which abuts or engages in an annular packing between the boiler and collecting vessel, and the second lift pipe 66 being rigidly attached to the base of the collecting vessel 12, removal of which uncovers the receptacle 26 for filling. A flange 24 of the receptacle 26 fits removably in a recess 20 in the thickened top edge 18 of the boiler 10. The perforated upper end of the pipe 32 extends into the receptacle 26 to receive perforated, central, tubular projections 41, 43 of curved screen members 40, 42. By using one or both screens, which are of different volumes, and by interchanging and reversing them or removing both, varying quantities of coffee may be placed in the receptacle 26, which is then covered by a filter paper 44. The collecting vessel 12 comprises an outer wall 52 spaced from an inner vessel 54, the outer wall 52 having a downwardly extending flange 50, between which and an annular shoulder of a perforated curved plate 48 secured to the base 58 of the inner vessel 54 a rubber gasket 46 is compressed. The vessels 10, 12 are releasably held together by diametrically opposed pins 98 on the vessel 12 each being forced into one of two slots 94, 96 in opposed discs 90 pivoted on the boiler 10. The slots extend symmetrically round, but eccentrically with respect to, the pivots 88 of the discs from a common opening 92, so that locking is effected whichever way the handles 108, in which the discs are embedded, are turned. The locking results in compression of the gasket 46 to form a fluid- and gas-tight seal. An outlet 68 from the collecting vessel 12 is opened by pressing down a spring-controlled valve member 74. In a modification, Fig. 3, the lower edge of the outer wall 52 of the vessel 12 is extended to form first a shoulder 132 surrounding a gasket 134 which encases the rim of a ground coffee receptacle 136, and then a cam lug 124 of a bayonet coupling, the co-operating cam lug 122 being secured to the top edge of the boiler beneath an outwardly turned flange thereof on which the gasket rests.
