Abstract

678,663. Copy-grinding. AKT.-GES. F. STUDER. April 10, 1951 [April 14, 1950], No. 8330/51. Class 60. A device for automatically guiding the pattern follower 3, Fig. 1, of a copy-grinding machine comprises driving means, which are secured to the machine and engaged or disengaged by hand, for a slide 28 to which two approximately parallel rods 34, 35 are pivotally connected, the opposite ends of the rods being similarly connected to the follower so that the latter may be fixed in any desired angular position. The follower is held against the pattern by spring action and is connected with the grinding wheel by a pantograph 1 and a parallelogram 5. The drive to the slide 28 is taken from a rotating part of the machine through a shaft 12. This shaft is connected by a ball-and-socket joint with a shaft 11 which is rotatably mounted in a block 10 secured to the pattern-holder table T of the machine and connected to a crank 13 and connecting rod 13a which actuates a ratchet wheel 14 through a pawl. The ratchet wheel is secured to a shaft 15, Fig. 2, driving a worm wheel 16 which may be clutched to a shaft 16a by rotation of a screw 17 in threaded engagement with an axial bore in the shaft. This screw has a fixed nut 20 at its lower end which presses the worm wheel into frictional engagement with a tapered portion at the end of the shaft 16a. The latter also carries a sheave 24 round which is lapped a wire cable 25 passing over pulleys mounted at opposite ends of one of two guide rods 30, 31 for the slide 28 and connected to the latter through a spring (not shown). Alternatively, the slide 28 may be driven by a rack and pinion from the shaft 16a. When the shaft 16a is disconnected from the worm wheel 16, the slide 28 may be manually displaced by rotation of a knurled collar 16b secured to the shaft. The shaft 15 may be driven continuously instead of being driven by ratchet gear. In a further modification, the slide 28 is connected to a rack which is intermittently displaced by a pawl mounted on the end of a lever, the latter being oscillated about its fulcrum by a moving part of the grinding machine. The drive may be stopped by manual disengagement of the pawl.
