Abstract

A process for the production of benzene hexachloride having a content of gamma isomer of at least 20 per cent by weight comprises introducing chlorine into a liquid mixture of benzene and one or more of the group of partially chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents consisting of methyl chloride, methylene chloride, chloroform, ethyl chloride, 1,1-dichlorethane, ethylene dichloride, 1,1,2-trichlorethane, sym-tetrachlorethane, propylene dichloride, 1-chloro - 1 - methyl - propane, n - butyl chloride, tert - butyl chloride, 1,2 - dichloro - isobutane, monofluorodichloromethane and 1,1 - difluoro-1,2-dichlorethane at a temperature between 0 DEG C. and -50 DEG C. in the presence of actinic light and in the absence of inhibitors of the addition reaction between benzene and chlorine. Light of wavelength between 4500 and 2500 is suitable. Any oxygen must be removed before the chlorination. In examples, a mixture of 3 moles. of solvent and 1 mole. of benzene is chlorinated at various temperatures in the range specified, the yield of gamma-isomer at each temperature being stated. The solvents employed are: (1), (6) and (7) methylene chloride, (2) ethylene dichloride, (3) 1,1,2-trichlorethane, (4) 1,2-dichloropropane, (5) monofluorodichloromethane. Example (6) is a continuous process, there being added to the filtrate from the precipitated gamma isomer more benzene and methylene chloride after which it is recycled for further chlorination. In example (7) chlorine, benzene and methylene dichloride in molar proportions 0.25 : 1 : 3 are mixed in the dark at -38 DEG C. and passed to a reactor, cooled to -50 DEG C., illuminated by mercury arc lamps. A graph shows the variation in a -, b -, g - and d -content of the product obtained with methylene dichloride solvent at temperatures between +30 DEG C. and -50 DEG C. A table shows the temperature of maximum g -isomer formation in each solvent specified. Reference is made to Specifications 637,412, 637,732, 24620/48 (as open to inspection), U.S.A. Specification 2,010,841, and Belgian Specification 471,772.
