Abstract

In the production of metallic zinc vapour by the distillation of zinc in the presence of a diluent gas including an oxidizing constituent with the resulting oxidation of zinc vapour by the oxidizing constituent at 800-1300 DEG C, there is introduced a crackable hydrocarbon which, by its cracking, produces a cloud of incandescent nascent carbon particles which prevents oxidation of the zinc. The crackable hydrocarbon may be a liquid or a gas introduced directly into the vapour space of a distillation apparatus, or may be introduced in the form of bituminous coal from which the volatile constituents are distilled.
