Abstract

677,530. Sewing-machines. SUMMERTON, T. F. Sept. 1, 1950 [June 18, 1949], No. 16261/49. Class 112. [Also in Group XXVI] Feed by moving machines and by rollers.-In a machine for sewing together two strips of material with interposed padding to form the edge wall of a spring mattress, in which the work is fed through the machine while a sewing apparatus moves relatively to it so that a zig-zag or wavy line of stitching is produced, the sewing apparatus is mounted on a separate moving base, so that a sewing machine of substantially standard form may be used, and the base is carried on rails by pairs of wheels engaging above and below the rails to prevent derailment. In the form shown a sewing-machine 4, of standard form apart from the method of drive described below, is secured to a horseshoe-shaped base 17 provided with grooved wheels 18 running on rails 19 and with rollers 22 engaging the underside of the rails; the spindles of the wheels 18 and rollers 22 are carried eccentrically by studs fixed in lugs on the base 17 so that they can be made to fit the rails closely and so that the height of the sewing-machine can be adjusted to ensure proper meshing of a gear carried by the machine with a driving-gear carried by the base 17, the gears being arranged as described below. The rails 19 are fixed on a carriage 10 which is mounted by wheels 11 on rails 12 on the frame 1 of the whole machine, so that the sewing- machine can be moved universally relatively to the frame 1 by linkages connected respectively to the base 17 and the carriage 10 and actuated by upper and lower tracks in a cam 15 driven through worm gear from the main shaft 2. The three strips of material to be joined pass to the machine 4 from reels 8 between a pair of rollers 5, and are fed by a similar pair of rollers 3 of which the lower one is actuated intermittently through roller ratchet gear 42 by a pitman 46 from a variable eccentric (see Group XXVI) on the shaft 2. The upper and lower shafts of the sewing-machine 4 are connected by bevel gears to a vertical shaft which extends below the machine to be driven by bevel gearing from a shaft carried by the base 17 parallel to the machine shafts; the base shaft is driven by spur-gearing from a shaft on the carriage 10, one of the gears being long enough to accommodate the relative movement of the base and the carriage, and the carriage shaft is similarly connected to the shaft 2 by bevel gearing and spur gearing providing for the relative movement of the carriage 10 and the frame 1. Driving by hand-gearing.-The shaft 2 is provided with a hand-wheel 63 embodying a ratchet device so that it can actuate the shaft only in the proper direction.
