677,206. Temperature-variable resistances; condensers; bridge circuits. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 29, 1950 [Sept. 10, 1949], No. 21318/50. Class 37. An electrical element having a critical upper temperature is calibrated by processing while the element is connected in a comparison circuit having an indicating means arranged to give a first predetermined indication when the element reaches its critical upper temperature during the processing and to give a second predetermined indication when the calibration process is completed. The processing method comprises changing the mass of the element in such a manner that the first predetermined indication is not exceeded and continuing to change the mass until the second predetermined indication is shown. The method is described as applied to adjusting a thermistor to a predetermined resistance value, but is also applicable for adjusting capacitors. A thermistor 10, Fig. 1, comprises a glass probe 11 within which are embedded a pair of conductors 12, the ends of which are embedded in a bead 13 of metallic oxide semi-conductor. A thin glass envelope 14 encloses the bead 13. The thermistor 10 and a reference thermistor 23, Fig. 3, are arranged in two arms of a Wheatstone bridge, the other two arms of which are formed by resistors 21, 22. The reference thermistor 23 is maintained at a constant temperature by immersion in a bath 24 of mercury, oil, &c. In series with the galvanometer 27 is variable resistor 28 which is shunted by a normally-open switch 29. The resistance of the thermistor is changed by grinding the end on a grinding-wheel 31 driven by a motor 32, or by removing portions of the bead 13 by drilling. With switches 26, 30 closed the resistor 28 is adjusted so that the galvanometer 27 gives a full-scale reading. The thermistor 10 is replaced by a resistor having a resistance equal to that of a standard calibrated thermistor at 300‹ F., and the reading of the galvanometer is noted with switches 29, 30 open, the resistor then being replaced by the thermistor 10. Grinding is then proceeded with, the galvanometer being observed during the operation. Whenever the temperature of the resistor reaches 300‹ F. the galvanometer gives the previously-noted reading, and the grinding is stopped to allow the thermistor to cool. The progress is checked by dipping the thermistor 10 into the bath 24 and noting the galvanometer reading. The galvanometer 27 may be calibrated to read percentage difference of resistance between the thermistors 10, 23. When the resistance of the thermistor 10 has reached its desired value it may be given a protective coating 40, Fig. 2, of varnish &c.
