Abstract
676,935. Uniting by fusion. RHEINISCHE ROHRENWERKE AKT.-GES. Oct. 26, 1950 [Oct. 26, 1949], No. 26192/50. Class 83 (iv). In welding together steel members by the submerged-arc process and by a single traverse of successive electrodes along the seam at such a speed that at least the major part of the molten steel produced by one electrode has solidified before the next electrode reaches it, the melting temperature at this electrode is such that the solidified melt produced by the preceding electrode is only re-melted to a negligible extent. The amperage and voltage of the current supplied to each electrode may be separately adjustable, the power supplied to any electrode preferably being greater than that supplied to the electrode following it. If plates 1, 2, 80 mms. thick, are to be joined by a non- symmetrical seam the smaller portion 3 may be welded by a known process to a depth e, e.g. about 25 mms. Then the groove 4 is welded to a depth of about 60 mms. by means of two electrodes 6, 7 about 170 mms. apart, the first electrode 6 may be 8 mms. in diameter and supplied with 2400 amps, at 48 volts while the electrode 7 may be 7 mms. in diameter and supplied with 1250 amps. at 45 volts. The distance between the heads carrying the electrodes is preferably adjustable so that these may be anything between 50 and 250 mms. apart. The welding powder 11 may have a lower silica content than usual, e.g. under 40 per cent.
