Abstract
Diolefines are copolymerized with one or more unsaturated fluorinated hydrocarbons selected from 1,1,2-trichloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene - 1, 2,3 - dichloro - 1,1,1,4,4,4 - hexafluorobutene - 2, 1,2 - dichloro - 3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluorocyclopentene, and hexafluorocyclobutene. Diolefines specified are butadiene-1,3, 2-methyl butadiene-1,3, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene-1,3, pentadiene-1,3, and 2-methyl pentadiene-1,3, also present may be other copolymerizable monomers such as styrene, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and acrylonitrile. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or dispersion with the aid of heat or actinic light or in the presence of catalysts such as ozone, ozonides, barium peroxide, sodium peroxide, persulphates, perchlorates and perborates, acetyl, lauryl, stearyl and benzoyl peroxides, tert. butyl perbenzoate, tert. butyl hydroperoxide-1, aluminium halides, methacrylic acid, hydrofluoric acid, and cobalt and manganese resinates, linoleates and maleates. Emulsifying agents, such as soaps, polyvinyl alcohol, water-soluble salts of polymerized methylene polycarboxylic acids, and water-soluble salts of sulphosuccinic esters, are preferably employed when carrying out the reaction in aqueous dispersion. The properties of the copolymers may be modified during reaction by the addition of modifying agents such as mercaptans. The products vary from insoluble and infusible bodies to rubber masses; the rubbery copolymers may be vulcanized in the presence of carbon black and zinc oxide. The copolymers may be compounded with natural rubber, reclaim rubber, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetal, vinyl halide resins, polyalkylene sulphides, wood flour, zinc oxide, whiting, clay, ferric oxide, mica and glass fibres and may be employed for electrical insulation, impregnating fibrous sheets, and, mixed with finely-divided alundum, for abrasive wheels.
