Abstract

676,638. Electrostatic precipitation. RESEARCH CORPORATION. June 22, 1949 [Aug. 18, 1948], No. 16577/49. Class 39 (i). An electrostatic precipitator comprises a plurality of separately energizable sets of discharge electrodes disposed in complementary relation to common collecting electrodes and spaced apart vertically to provide spaced precipitating zones. In a precipitator of the tubular type, Fig. 1, the sets of discharge electrodes 24, 25 extend from opposite ends into the tubular collecting electrodes 16. The discharge electrodes 24 extend over half the length of the tubes 16. The tubes 16 are supported by a horizontal plate 13 which provides with the wall of the casing a reservoir for flushing fluid. The discharge electrodes comprise a central core 31, Fig. 2, supporting a plurality of star-shaped discs 32 spaced apart by sleeves 341 In a precipitator of the parallel-plate type, Fig. 4, the collecting electrodes 53 are arranged in a square cross-sectioned passage, the corners of which are contiguous with the walls of a cylindrical casing 51, and the sides of which form with the walls of the casing, four vertically-extending side passages. The gas enters two opposite passages, is directed downwards through a perforated gas distributing plate 111, and then flows past the collecting electrodes to the outlet 110. Hoppers 107 leading to the main hopper 69 are provided in the other two side passages 86, 87. The lower set of discharge electrodes is supported by tubular members 85 which extend through the peripheral passages 86, 87 to insulator housings 92, 93. Rapping mechanism in two diametrically opposite insulator housings, actuate vibration transmitting rods extending through the tubes 85. Rapping mechanism may also be provided in the insulator housings 104, 105 for the upper set of discharge electrodes. The discharge electrodes are formed of twisted square rods with bulbous ends for preventing corona discharges. The collecting electrodes each consist of two arrays of vertical plates spaced apart to provide interior passages leading through dust shoots 68 to a hopper 69. Access for precipitated material from the exterior of the composite collecting structure to the interior passage is provided by outwardly flaring the tops of the plates to form upwardly facing slots. Rapping mechanism is provided for the collecting electrodes.
