Abstract

676,032. Radiolocation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 9, 1951 [Jan. 9, 1950], No. 565/50. Class 40 (vii). Frequency-modulated radar distance measuring apparatus for aircraft includes a transmitting aerial system and a receiving aerial system each arranged to have radiation patterns with two different directions of high sensitivity, namely ahead of, and downwards from, the aircraft, and switching means so arranged that transmission and reception takes place alternately in one only of the two directions, the switch means also feeding the beat frequency produced in the receiver alternately to two distance indicators in synchronism with the change of direction so that the indicators show respectively the range of reflecting objects in the two directions. The invention thus indicates the craft's altitude and the range of obstructions ahead of the craft. A suitable aerial system may comprise a pair of reflector backed transmitting aerials 11 and 12 fed alternately by frequency modulated transmitter 1 through switch 8 and a like pair of receiving aerials 13 and 14 feeding the receiving system through switch 9. The receiver as shown includes an intermediate frequency oscillator 15 and I.F. amplifier 19 and its output beat frequency is fed through amplifier 5, and switch 10 operated in synchronizm with switches 8 and 9 to indicators 6 and 7 registering the distance of the reflecting objects. The transmitter may include an oscillator having a resonant cavity assembly, the capacity of a condenser built into the structure of which is varied by rotation of a shaft carrying the condenser vane. Preferably two vanes are provided so that the modulation frequency makes alternate sweeps over different frequency ranges and a commutator on the condenser shaft brings into action corresponding units in indicators 6 and 7 having ranges for example of 0-1000 and 0-5000 feet. If desired, a warning device may be substituted for the short distance range when measuring distances to obstacles ahead on the craft's course.
