Abstract

674,874. Magnetic amplifiers. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. Feb. 10, 1949 [Feb. 13, 1948; Oct. 16, 1948], Nos. 3693/49 and 3694/49. Class 40 (iv). [Also in Groups XXXV, XL(b) and XL (c)] A signal is amplified by amplitude (or phase) modulating with it a carrier oscillation which produces after detection the amplified signal in a circuit in which the modulator is an inductance 1 as described with reference to Fig. 1. This has a ferromagnetic core 2 (preferably of ferrite with high permeability and resistance) to which is applied in a direction at right angles to a component of the A.C. field H, a polarizing magnetic field Ho the value of which is constant or varies slowly relative to H and is of an intensity such that the electrons to'which the magnetic properties are due precess about the polarizing field vector with substantially the frequency of the A.C. field. The polarizing field H is produced in a magnetic circuit 6 by a current in winding 5. When coil 1 forms part of a tuned circuit, curve #1f of Fig. 17 shows the relationship between field strength and the amount of detuning suffered by the circuit from the resonant frequency it has when the field value is fr such that the electrons precess in synchronism. Curve #2f shows the losses measured as the half-value width of the tuned circuit characteristic. Amplitude and phase modulation may be obtained by operating on a steeply sloping part of curve #2f whereby the attenuation suffered by the wave as it passes through the core is varied (see Group XL (c)). The invention may take the form not only of a wound inductance but also of a Lecher system, a wave-guide, a coaxial cable, or a cavity resonator.
