Abstract

A conductive metal film is applied to the surface of an electrically non-conducting article by activating the surface, applying to the activated surface an aqueous acidic solution of a halide salt of a metal below hydrogen in the electromotive series and then applying a solution containing the fluoborate of the metal to be applied, a reducing agent, and the fluoborate of another metal above hydrogen in the electromotive series. Cellulose acetate or a synthetic resin is first cleansed in a solution containing caustic soda, washed, immersed in 10 per cent nitric acid solution, rinsed and immersed in an activating solution comprising titanium oxide, sulphuric acid, sodium lauryl sulphate and water: it is then again rinsed and subjected to a solution comprising palladium chloride, hydrochloric acid and water and immediately transferred to a solution formed by mixing solutions of (a) copper fluoborate, nickel fluoborate, alpha-trioxymethylene and water and (b) sodium hydroxide, Rochelle salt, sodium carbonate and water. The copper coating so fomed may be thickened by repeated immersion. The coated article is then treated with 10 per cent ammonium chloride solution, rinsed and subjected to conventional electroplating methods. Instead of nickel fluoborate, cobalt, zinc and iron fluoborates may be used and instead of alpha-trioxytmethylene, formaldehyde or its polymers. The coating of glass, ceramics, wood, leather, hard rubber, phenol condensation products and natural resins is also referred to.
