Abstract

674,416. Chucks; lathes. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (National Acme Co.). Nov. 29, 1950, No. 29261/50. Class 83 (iii). A hollow-spindle chuck for gripping a workpiece, such as a valve 16, so that both ends can be machined simultaneously, comprises a pair of oppositely-facing collets 35, 37 closed by wedge means 48 forced between the opposed tapered ends 46, 47 of a pair of collet-engaging sleeves 42, 44. The chuck is fitted between a pair of end caps 27, 28 on the hub of a gear 11 which is journalled on a support 10 and is driven by a gear 12 on a spindle 13. The end caps each have a shoulder 30 against which a shoulder 38 on each collet is pressed by a spring 39 so that the collets do not move axially on the valve stem as they grip it, and one cap 28 can be screwed into various positions and locked by a screw 49 so that the distance between the shoulders 30, and therefore the gripping diameter, is varied; the cap 27 has also a flange 29 which engages the valve head to prevent bending. Balls 48 comprise the wedge means and, to close the chuck, are forced between the ends of the sleeves 42, 44 by a slidable spool 51 having a cam surface 52. One or more sliding pins 53 are fitted between each end cap and the spool and operate the chuck whilst it is rotating, being engaged by a rotating sleeve sliding over the head of the valve to open the chuck or by a rotating sleeve on the tool slide to close the chuck.
