Abstract

The invention comprises an ethyl silicate such that on distillation at atmospheric pressure under certain defined conditions (without any substantial reflux) 8-16 per cent by volume distils up to 180 DEG C. and 39-55 per cent above 180 DEG C. Such an ester comprises mainly ethyl orthosilicate with a certain amount of di-, tri- and poly-silicates. The preferred composition is such that 12\sB2 per cent (or better \sB0.5 per cent) distils up to 180 DEG C. and 48\sB 2 per cent (or better \sB0.5 per cent) above 180 DEG C. This may be made by (1) adding silicon tetrachloride and ethyl alcohol containing 5-6 per cent of water simultaneously to a small amount of ethyl silicate of the correct composition and heating the mixture, or (2) mixing together (a) an ethyl silicate prepared from silicon tetrachloride and aqueous alcohol, containing large quantities of higher silicates, and (b) pure ethyl orthosilicate prepared from silicon tetrachloride and anhydrous alcohol. Any hydrochloric acid remaining in the product is removed by aeration until its content is below 0.1 per cent by weight, say 0.07 per cent by weight. Examples are given of both methods of preparation. The product may be hydrolysed to gelatinous silicic acid which may be mixed with refractory materials and fired to give silica as a bonding agent (see Group V).
