Class 94(i) A baling machine, for hay, straw or like compressible material, includes a bale chamber having an adjustable side movement of which, to enlarge or diminish the cross-section of the chamber, is controlled by a cam device automatically operable by means arranged to penetrate the newlybaled material dependently upon its density, whereby to provide bales of substantially uniform density by adjustment of the movable side. Hay, fed into an a ram chamber 12, is pushed by a ram 14 through two convergent walls 13 into a bale chamber 11 which has one side 17 movable inwardly and outwardly. A two-faced cam 18 is journalled on a pin 25, fast with a part 19 on the wall 17, to engage, with one face, the part 19 and, with the other face,. a stationary abutment 20 carried by a strip member 21. The cam 18 is fast with an arm 24 linked to a pivoted lever 27 carrying a spiked wheel 28 urged, by a spring 29, into the material in the baling chamber. According to the density of the material pressed in the baling chamber so the extent of penetration of the spikes varies. This variation causes movement of the lever 27 to turn the cam 18 to move the bale chamber side 17 in or out.
