672,478.. Making rock-drills. AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL. June 16, 1950 [July 22, 1949], No. 15100/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Jointing by forging.-In a method of securing a screw-threaded stud 4 in the end of a hollow rock drill rod 1, Fig. 4, the portion of the stud to be embedded in the end of the rod is formed at least in part with engaging portions such as a screw thread 5 and the rod has an enlarged end 2 with a recess 3 corresponding in shape to the portion of the stud to be inserted which is forged round the stud. The recess 3 may be formed by turning and screwing or by forging on a mandrel. The stud has a longitudinal bore 21 communicating with the passage 9 in the drill rod and has a tapered portion 6 with longitudinal grooves 7 which the metal of the drill rod partly fills during forging to prevent relative rotation between the parts. The forging is carried out by a pair of semi-cylindrical dies 10. In a modification the stud has a smaller screw-threaded portion 20, Fig. 8, at its lower end joined to a larger tapered portion 19 having longitudinal grooves 22. The embedded portion of the screw-thread 5 may be replaced by cam projections &c., and the grooves 7, 22 may be omitted and replaced by other recesses or the stud may be made of non-circular cross-section.
