A dishwashing apparatus comprises a watertight body rotatably mounted on a supporting structure, a basket of open construction provided for positioning articles to be washed within the body, resilient means being provided for retaining the articles in position in the basket, and means for rotating the body and the basket. A cylindrical container 21, Figs. 1 and 2, for washing water carries trunnions 22, 23 which are journalled in bearings 17 on standards 16 of a supporting structure 14. The container is made watertight by a cover 26 hinged at 31 and provided with clamps 32, the watertightness being assured by a gasket 27, Fig. 4. The-closed container is rotatable end over end by a crank handle or wheel 24 with handle 25 or by motor power. The cover 26 is provided with a discharge spout 28 closable by a threaded cap 29, a washer 30 being provided between the spout and cap. When the container is inverted it may be emptied by removing the cap 29 so that water then runs off through a hole 33 in the supporting structure 14 into a sink or pail. A dish basket 34, Fig. 4, of sheet metal, wire, or wood construction and open design, fits snugly into the container 21 so that there is no substantial movement relative to the container when the cover 26 is clamped down and the container is revolved. Transverse members 35 divide the basket 34 into a number of vertical dish compartments and displacement of the dishes is prevented by coil springs 36, or other stretchable flexible means, which springs are fastened permanently at one end 37 and by a catch 38 at the other end. An inner basket 39, of similar construction is removably supported in the basket 34 by shoulders 40 formed in the side walls 41. The basket 39 contains a plurality of platforms 42, 43 mounted on springs 44. The platforms 42, 43 are perforated to allow passage of water therethrough. The platforms 42 are contained in compartments formed of lateral and longitudinal members while the platform 43 has its own compartment 49. A wire cover 50 fits over the articles housed in the basket 39 and is held in place by hinges and catches or by contact with the cover 26. In operation the dishes are placed in their compartments and locked in position by the springs 36 and the inner basket is fitted into the basket 34. Glasses and cups are placed in position on the platforms 42 and knives, forks and spoons heaped on the platform 43. The wire cover 50 is then locked in position or held in place when the cover is locked. A small amount, of soap powder and hot water are added to the container prior to closing the cover or through the discharge spout 28. The container is then revolved to wash the articles by the cascading effect of the water. The water is then run off and rinse water is afterwards run in through the spout 28 and the container is again rotated. Finally the rinse water is run off and the hot articles are left to drain and then dry by evaporation. In another embodiment the container has the section of a regular geometrical figure and one transverse side wall of the container carries the outlet drain. In this case the container is not turned end over end but rotates about its longitudinal axis which is horizontal.
