Abstract

672,129. Extruding; composite casting. FIELDING & PLATT, Ltd., ROWLES, R. V., and GENDERS, R. Nov. 9, 1949 [Nov. 11, 1948], No. 29356/48. Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group V] An extruding die is composed in part of a metal or alloy having a higher thermal conductivity than the working surface of the die so that heat may be more readily conducted to or away from the working surface. The main mass 1 of the die may be of chromium-copper alloy to which a thin annular plate 2 of tungsten-chromium or similar steel is applied to form the working surface or a cast plate having a boss extending part of the way along the die orifice may be employed. Alternatively, the surface 2 may be deposited by electrodeposition, welding or other means. In a modification, the main mass 4, Fig. 3, of the die may be of hard steel to which inserts 5 or casings enclosing part of the die, are fitted. The more conductive masses assist in the flow of heat away from the working surface and prevent plastic flow of that surface but heat may be applied through any desired portion of the die to the material being extruded or a proportion of the die surface may be protected by a layer of low-conductivity material in order to restrict the area of the die from which heat is extracted. Composite casting.-The plate having a boss may be cast in the form required and the main mass 1 cast in contact with it, the " lostwax" casting method being employed. Billet containers.-The Provisional Specification also refers to the application of the invention to the billet container of an extruding apparatus.
