[Also in Group I] Apparatus for the treatment of water, in. cluding a cation and anion exchange unit is characterized by a meter 10 measuring the conductivity of the water after passing through the cation vessel 1, and a flow meter 14 located after the anion vessel 12, both being connected to an integrating instrument 20 which indicates the degree of exhaustion of the anion exchange material in the unit 12, or may automatically control the concentration of the regenerating chemical. for the anion vessel 12. A conductivity meter 6 located after the cation vessel 1 indicates the degree of exhaustion of the cation exchange material in that vessel by comparing its reading with that of a further conductivity meter 8 located after an auxiliary vessel 4 in parallel with vessel 1, and containing an excess of exchange material, and may be made to give an audible or visible warning. A further conductivity meter 16 in the discharge pipe of the system may be arranged also to give warning when the conductivity rises to indicate excessive exhaustion of the exchange material in the anion vessel 12.
