Abstract

670,820. Toothed gearing. SHEPHERD, G. R. (Westinghouse Electric International Co.). Nov. 10, 1949, No. 28816/49, Class 80 (i). [Also in Group VIII] Laminated blanks for rim members for gears or wheels are made from a strip 10 of fibrous material which is impregnated with a resinous binder and provided with discontinuous spaced aligned slits along its centre line. The strip is softened by superheated steam ejected through perforations in platens 26 and 28, is folded along its centre line about the aligned slits, e.g. by folding-rollers 30 and 32, and is wound on edge on a mandrel 20 in the shape of a helix having the aligned slits in the outer edge while pressure is applied to the turns, e.g. by a roller 24. A thin dressing of a lubricating or waxy material such as calcium stearate may be applied to the strip, e.g. by rubbing contact with a block 34 of the material, to facilitate folding and winding. The fibrous strip may be a woven fabric and the resinous impregnant a phenol- or urea-formaldehyde resin. On cooling, the helix is removed from the mandrel in the form of a cylinder which, while placed on a second support is cut into equal-sized sections by means of a cutting tool which severs only one turn of the helix. The sections are thereafter hot-pressed into consolidated rim members embodied in a gear or wheel.
