[Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIV] In the manufacture of a spring, a strip of mild steel is wound helically around a cylindrical mandrel, a small space of say 1/16 inch being left between adjacent turns, and welded joints are made between adjacent helical turns. The joints are made at locations corresponding to <2>/5ths of the circumference of the cylinder, the joints of one turn being staggered with respect to the joints of adjacent turns.
