Column-shifting means for a binary machine consists of a chain of relays a the contacts of which are so wired between a plurality of input lines b representing binary denominations and a plurality of output lines c, that a binary number represented by potentials applied to the input lines b will be reproduced on the output lines c always with the highest significant digit on the same output line. In an example shown by heavy lines in the Figure, the highest digit in the binary representation of an amount 42, which is 32 or 2<SP>5</SP>, causes energization of relay 321, whereby contacts are changed over and the amount is represented by potentials on the output lines A, C and E.
