Abstract
Magnesium silicofluoride, obtained, for example, by the process of Specification 669,518, is dissolved or suspended in an aqueous medium, and reacted with ammonium hydroxide, and the ammonium fluoride so formed is separated and distilled with sulphuric acid to produce hydrofluoric acid. The magnesium hydroxide and silica mixture separated from the ammonium fluoride may be used as a fertilizer material, or treated with carbonated water or mineral acid to dissolve the former. Prior to treatment with sulphuric acid, the ammonium fluoride solution is concentrated, or the salt may be salted out by ammonia. Alternatively, the solution may be evaporated to diquess or crystallized. The hydrofluoric acid may be dehydrated by concentrated sulphuric acid. The ammonia used in the process may be recovered as such or as ammonium sulphate.
