Abstract

669,011. Upholstery stuffing-apparatus. KAMBORIAN, J. S. June 21, 1950. No. 15484/50. Class 52 (iv). [Also in Groups VIII, X and XVII] In making furniture seats or cushions by applying pliable sheet material 6, which may enclose padding, to a rigid backing 4 and securing its edged 7 to the rear face of the backing as by adhesive or metallic fasteners, a pull which is applied to the margin of the sheet at one point is caused to move along the edge of the backing and at the same time the margin is progressively wiped inwardly over the rear face and secured to it. The cover and backing are preferably first attached at several spaced points as by removable tacks or by turning over and if necessary cutting the cover at the corners and permanently securing it in place. Subsequent operations may be effected on a table which may have ball bearing supports. One form of stretching appliance comprises oppositely rotating rolls 24, 25, between which the margin is inserted, and a wiper 29 having a helical rib 30 which engages the margin as it emerges from the rolls and impels it inwardly over the upper surface of the backing which is held down bv a member 31 associated with the rolls. A nozzle 32 may deliver hot air to activate a thermoplastic adhesive already applied or may supply the adhesive itself. In another construction the wiper comprises a rotary disc with spaced segmental elements engaging the material and the hold-down member constitutes a nozzle supplying adhesive. Or one of the gripping rolls may be replaced by a fixed concave member conforming to the contour of the rotary roll and the wiper is of ribbed disc type. Another modification provides a pair of nipper jaws which stretch successive portions of the margin, releasing them in a position to be engaged by a rotary wiper. A pair of rolls may be associated with a reciprocating blade wiper and staple driving mechanism. Panels which are curved or angular in section may be covered in the same way.
