Abstract

667,716. Binding loose leaves. OLYMPIC VARNISH CO., Ltd. Jan. 25, 1950 [July 1, 1949; Dec. 27, 1949], No. 1973/50. Class 16. A machine for binding slotted perforated sheets (loose leaf blocks and/or cover members therefor) by rings (or ring-like members) cooperating with the slotted perforations, comprises a bin or container for rings, means for distributing the rings in individual piles in the same vertical plane, means for presenting the sheets to the base of the piles with the slotted perforations vertically below the piles, and means for applying pressure to effect the interengagement of the rings and the slotted perforations of the sheets. Rings 5 pass from a bin 1 to a slope 2 from which they fall into receptacles 13 leading to vertical shoots 4 in a block 3. Rings not in alignment with receptacles 13 are rejected and returned by projections 12 on a roller 10 driven in direction of arrow f. The rate of flow of rings from bin 1 is regulated by slidably mounted shutters 8, and stop bars 9 scatter the rings. Transparent plates 2a and 14a hold the rings in the machine and allow inspection of the rate of flow thereof. According to a first embodiment, Fig. 8, the lowermost rings 5a rest in arcuate recesses in the base plate 7 of the machine and pressure is exerted on the edge of the leaves, or covers g<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP>, placed on the work table 6 with perforated edges between the lowermost rings 5a and the next rings 5b and against a stop 16 to align the slotted perforations with the rings. Pressure is exerted by a comb 18, with teeth lying between the rings, pivoted at 19 and operated by depressing a bar 21 against a spring 22. An independent tool. comprising the comb 18 and recessed table in which the rings already on the covers may rest under the comb, may be used for adding the leaves. The comb teeth may be bevelled to prevent damage to the leaves. In a second embodiment, Fig. 11, pressure is exerted on the ring piles and the sheets are positioned with their slotted perforations between the rings 5a and slots 27a in a fixed comb 27, pressure being exerted by downward movement of fingers 36 on a frame 32, 33. A plate 28 is pressed by springs 31 against the comb 27 to hold the ring piles when no sheets are in position. The slotted perforations in the covers and leaves may be made by a punch mounted on the base of the machine, the movable unit of the punch being connected by links to the bin 1 to vibrate the bin to facilitate the descent of the rings. Specification 590,431 is referred to.
