Abstract
2-[2-(Phthalimidoethyl)] pyridine is obtained by condensing equimolecular proportions of phthalimide and 2-vinyl-pyridine in presence of alkaline condensing agents, e.g. alkali amides and alcoholates. The amine is preferably converted into its water-soluble addition salts such as those of the mineral acids, and non-toxic organic acids, e.g. citric and tartaric, or quaternary salts formed by addition of lower alkyl esters of strong inorganic acids. In an example, phthalimide is condensed with 2-vinylpyridine in presence of trimethylbenzylammonium hydroxide, and the product converted to the hydrochloride.
