Abstract

667,439. Differential switches. REED & CO., Ltd., A. E., and CATTELL, P. W. Feb. 9, 1950. No. 3401/50. Class 38 (v). [Also in Group XXXV] A differential switch controlling an automatic voltage regulator (see Group XXXV) consists of a pair of contacts 7, 8 mounted on arms secured to an insulated sleeve 14 on a shaft 5, rotated by a constant speed motor. The contacts are connected to slip rings 9, 10. A third contact 6 is mounted on an arm 3 secured to an insulated shaft 19, which is friction driven by a rotating shaft 4. When a speed differential exists between the sets of contacts, contact 6 engages with either contact 7 or contact 8 to operate the automatic control system. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the contacts are mounted on the faces of parallel rotating discs, instead of being on transverse arms.
