Abstract
666,527. Cathode-ray tubes. CINEMATELEVISION, Ltd.; and FREEMAN, G. S. P. July 24, 1950 [July 26, 1949], No. 19600/49. Class 39 (i). A television pick-up tube comprises in combination a target electrode in the form of a thin semi-conducting layer which carries on one side thereof a photo-sensitive mosaic and is adapted to be scanned on the other side thereof with a low velocity scanning beam and a planar capacitative electrode in the form of a substantially transparent conducting film, positioned in close proximity to said target on the mosaic side thereof. As shown, a pick-up tube comprises an envelope 1 containing an electron gun 2, a solenoid 3 for focusing, and scan coils 4. The target consists of a diaphragm 5 of a semiconductor, such as glass or aluminium oxide suitably treated, which is sufficiently thin to enable electrical charges to leak from one face to the other in less than one frame period. One face of the target is scanned by the scanning beam and on the other face is deposited a mosaic 6 of photo-sensitive material which receives illumination through the flat window 7 at the end of the tube. On the inner face of the window, and mounted in close proximity to the target assembly is a capacitative electrode 8 consisting of a transparent conducting film. When light is focused on the mosaic elements, which will be the action of the low velocity scan have reached a potential near to that of the electron gun cathode, photo-electrons are emitted and are collected on the electrode 8, which is maintained slightly positive with respect to the gun cathode. It is stated that by a suitable choice of voltage for electrode 8 it can be ensured that even under the brightest illumination the secondary emission caused by the impact of the scanning beam never reaches a value greater than unity, and the unstable condition arising when a tube suddenly receives brilliant illumination is prevented. The position of the target relative to the electrode 8 may be adjustable by mechanical means, as described in Specification 666,526.
