666,169. Impact-operated switches; inertia switches.. TECALEMIT SOC. ANON. March 31, 1949. [May 26, 1948; July 21, 1948] Nos. 8818/49 and 8819/49. Class 38 (v). A device for detecting deformation of a member on which it is mounted such as the surface of an aircraft, whereby fire-extinguishing apparatus is operated in the event of a crash, comprises a bare conductor wire 3" supported by spaced insulator 5 in a tubular conductor 1<SP>11</SP>. The latter is earthed and the wire 3<SP>11</SP> connected to the positive side of a battery 4 so that on contact being made between 1<SP>11</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> due to deformation of the tube 1<SP>11</SP> a circuit is completed through the detonator 13 of the fire-extinguisher 11. To increase the sensitivity of the tube 1<SP>11</SP> the insulators 5 are spaced further apart, and where the tube is curved for securing to a correspondingly-shaped surface, the insulators are closer together, Fig. 2 (not shown). The system may include an inertia-operated device as disclosed in the French Specification 963,129, comprising a spherical metal core 7 having a number of points 10, 10<SP>1</SP> normally spaced from an earthed shell 6 by rubber elements 9. In the event of a shock in anv direction the circuit to the detonator 13 is completed through the shell 6 and core 7. Fig. 4 (not shown), illustrates an aircraft-equipped with the system. To enable contact to occur between the tube 1<SP>11</SP> and wire 3<SP>11</SP> for smaller degrees of bending of the tube, the wire 3<SP>11</SP> is weakened at selected points such that its greater length remains straight and bears tangentially against the tube when the latter deforms. This is achieved, Fig. 6, by surrounding the part of the wire 21<SP>1</SP> between the insulator 23 by a conducting tube 21. Alternatively, the wire 21<SP>1</SP> could itself be narrowed in the region of the insulators or in a section mid-way between them, Figs. 11, 12 (not shown). Other modifications, Figs. 8-10, 13-16 (not shown) consist in employing tempered steel wire, annealed at the insulators or between them, and in coiling the wire at these places.
