Abstract

665,713. Sewing-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). July 28, 1950 [July 29 1949], No. 19936/49. Addition to 594,753. Class 112. Welt-cutting in outsole sewing-machines; stopping-gear.-The machine of the parent Specification is modified to provide for cutting of the welt' to take place during the last cycle but two in the formation of the seam, after the work has been fed and the needle has withdrawn from it, instead of in the penultimate cycle before the feed and the needle stroke, in order to allow more latitude in timing; the stop-gear is therefore modified to ensure the completion of four stitches (instead of three) after release of the control treadle, the welt being cut during the second of these stitches so that two stitches are made (as before) after the cutting. The weltcutter is actuated by a cam through a follower lever which is normally latched out of operation and is returned to the latched position after one operation, the latch being released by the stopgear to initiate the action; the connection between the stop-gear and the latch is broken during the release and is not restored until a manual catch is operated. The welt is clamped during cutting and thereafter until the work is released, to avoid any displacement by the knife, which might result in incomplete severing. The mechanism for initiating the welt-cutting action on release of the treadle rod 34 and for delaying the stopping of the machine for the required time thereafter is substantially the same as that of the parent Specification, except that the counting finger 64 has two delay notches instead of one. The knife-actuating arm 90 on the shaft 92, with biassing spring 160 and stop 156, is also similarly operated by a cam 100 engaging a follower 94 which is swung laterally, after operation, by a cam 106 and is then held out of action by a latch 102; the releasing cable 50 from the lever 52 is connected to a hook member 114 which in its upward movement lifts the latch 102 to release the follower 94 into engagement with the cam and which is then disengaged from the latch and held disengaged by a catch 120 requiring to be manually released before a subsequent cutting action to be started. The knife slides in grooves in the welt guide as described in the parent Specification, and the arm 90 is connected by a link 154 to a crank which is pivoted on a bracket on the welt guide 22 and which has a forked arm 144 embracing a screw fixed in one of a series of holes in the shank of the knife. The arm 90 also carries a spring-plunger 182 engaging a welt-clamping lever 24 pivotally mounted on a slide 26 on the welt-guide and cooperating with a lower jaw fixed on the slide; the lever 24 is latched in the clamping position until released at the end of a longitudinal movement of the slide which feeds the cut end of the welt forward for the commencement of work on a new shoe. This movement is produced by an arm 196 actuated by a rod 200 which is held by a latch 214 until a lever 206, actuated by the stopgear while the presser-foot is being released after completion of the seam, releases the latch by means of an abutment 212, the rod 200 then being moved by a spring 208 compressed by the arm 206. Specification 532,026 is referred to.
